The EVES Surfbreaker Triathlon is a true fixture on the Mount Maunganui summer calendar, bringing together athletes, spectators and the wider community for a morning of competition, camaraderie and coastal atmosphere.
Held annually in late December, the Surfbreaker has been part of the Bay of Plenty sporting landscape since 1985. With decades of history behind it, the event has grown into one of New Zealand’s longest-running and most recognisable triathlons, attracting participants of all ages and abilities from across the country.
A Unique Coastal Challenge
Set against the iconic backdrop of Mount Main Beach, the Surfbreaker offers a course that is as challenging as it is scenic. The swim leg takes place in the open surf, providing a distinctive start that sets this event apart from many other triathlons. From there, competitors transition onto the bike and run courses that weave through the Mount, finishing with a memorable run along the beach.
It’s this combination of coastal conditions, spectator-friendly courses and holiday atmosphere that makes the Surfbreaker such a popular event for both first-time triathletes and experienced competitors.
Distances for All Abilities
The EVES Surfbreaker Triathlon is designed to be inclusive, with several race options available:
- Sprint Triathlon - 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run
- Super Sprint Triathlon - 375m swim, 7km bike, 2.5km run
- Aquathon - 750m swim, 5km run
These varied distances make the event accessible for those new to multisport racing, while still providing an exciting challenge for seasoned athletes looking to test their speed and endurance.
Community at Its Core
While competition is at the heart of the Surfbreaker, the event is equally about community. Held during the festive season, it draws families, friends and supporters to the Mount, creating a vibrant atmosphere along the course. The event celebrates personal milestones, teamwork and participation just as much as podium finishes.
EVES has proudly supported the Surfbreaker for over 30 years, reflecting our ongoing commitment to the communities we operate in and our belief in supporting local events that bring people together.
